The Tiger Lillies is mainly a band of three musicians: Adrian Huge: percussions; Adrian Stout double bass; Martyn Jacques (founder): vocals, piano, accordion, lyrics, and composition. They occasionally add other musicians for their recordings/performances, but generally, only the three go alone on their world-wide tours.Martyn Jacques performs wearing extremely heavy makeup: crimson lips, powdered face (clown/kabuki style), very heavy kohl, and 1900-like clothes and bowler hat. The 2 other members of the band usually have much lighter makeup, and dress less flamboyantly. Having trained himself for some 6 years for opera singing in castrati (countertenor), style, Jacques' voice is unusually haunting, disturbing, but also mesmerizing, and intriguing; ranging from whispers, to shrieks and screams. His lyrics are dark, moody, outrageous, bizarre, morbid, shocking, and often unsettling, with varied subjects such as: love, romance, prostitutes, pimps, criminal children, torture, death, etc.It has often been said that it is difficult to categorize the band, which is true. In a documentary produced on one of their tours in the US, Adrian Stout described Jacques' music as "simple", while Jacques himself said it was a mixture of many things such as: Jazz, Cabaret, Gipsy, Opera, etc. They enjoy a cult underground following, and they have self-produced many CDs, and theater, though it seems that their commercial success is not very wide, undoubtedly due to the unusual characteristics of their art. This CD is rather unusual: Jacques adapted the lyrics from works by Edward Gorey; and the music is played by the famous Kronos Quartet. The booklet contains the lyrics of the 13 songs on the CD. It is a good sample of the band's work. If you have a broad mind and musical taste, with a penchant for the bizarre, you'll love the Tiger Lillies!!
