“An odyssey! Loveland hits all the right notes: complex, memorable characters with honor, grit, and determination, and families to root for and weep with.” —Kathleen McBride, founder and president of FiduciaryPathIn this family saga historical fiction, two families parallel the trajectory of a nation—war heroes, trust funds, and the rise and great unraveling of the American dream.A rich exploration of the changing values that have shaped the United States, The End of the Empire follows three generations of the MacAlpines and Bergens as their stories intertwine and parallel the trajectory of post–World War II America.Best friends Cameron and Harold return from the horrors of World War II, hoping to settle down, work hard, and build a legacy. For a time, all is going well: business is thriving, their wives are best friends, their children are bright and interesting. But the 1960s—later compounded by the Vietnam War and America’s growing polarization—complicates the peaceful life they’ve worked toward.Cameron’s younger son becomes a spy. One of Harold’s daughters leaves her children to start a new life as a spiritual teacher. Worst of all, Harold’s only son capitalizes on his military service to launch a writing career.A sweeping generational saga, The End of the Empire takes readers from the suburbs of Minneapolis to the State Department in Washington, DC, the hardscrabble hills of Appalachia, down winding streets in Bulgaria, and into the mountains of Afghanistan.A celebration of American history fiction, this novel spans decades—from the end of World War II to the chaotic Cold War, and from the turbulent Vietnam War era to the storming of the Capitol. With relatable, multi-dimensional characters ranging from spies to spiritual teachers, The End of the Empire is a story of redemption and reclaiming values . . . and how far people are willing to go to find, and protect, what they love.“Loveland’s storytelling anchors the book to something meaningful in these times—resilience. Our country’s history has both light and dark, just like the families at the center of this novel, but in context and in reality there is a welcome reminder that even with loss, we can stumble through and celebrate life.” —Noah Bly, president of Integrated Development LLC and honors graduate of Harvard University
This is a mesmerizing story of our national drama told through the eyes of those who lived it. It is a unique, inciteful, and yet analytical tale of the America that was never as perfect as we thought, yet lost much of the good that it did once have, Keith Loveland captured my interest as I relived, and saw a similar yet different perspective to mine through the eyes of very real characters, of the last 8 decades of life in America. Well written and well worth reading.
