This adventurous couple came to Alaska from New Hampshire with dreams of living richly in the wilderness on ten dollars a day. Ed brought his experience as a builder, and Janice brought her New England work ethic. Together they fell in love with the heartbreakingly beautiful landscape of the Far North. Part love story, part adventure, and part natural history, this book is a touching memoir of carving out a life in the wilderness, building a log house, and living life to its fullest.
Ipad in hand, I read this while cruising through the breathtaking beauty of the Inside Passage of Alaska.Knowing that this story was true, real and the author still writingmade this incredible adventure all the more gripping. I could relate to the author'sprevious conservative status quo life and the choice to live the life less traveled, andas the harrowing adventures unfold - it was truly hard to put the book down. This is an incredible story of courage and true life adventure, interwoven with a sense of community, andhe power of choice even in the midst of adversity. A side note: if you ever wondered what a current pioneerlife might look like, or living in the wilds of Alaska, read this book. While on my cruise - a national park guidecame on board, I mentioned the book, and discovered Jan Schofield Eaton's other amazing resource book -Discovering Wild Plants was the guide's favorite - cool since "Beyond Road's End" details the story of how thatbook came to be! Worth the read...
