The song is a classic Honky Tonk Song. "Bright Lights Uptown" was actually written and recorded by Jim Durdel, who at the time lived in Neoga, Illinois. If you listen to the rest of the songs on the album, you can easily tell the difference in the voice recorded.Jim Durdel was born on December 29, 1932. He played in the Central Illinois area with his band "Jim Durdel and the Drifters". He was a song writer/singer. He recorded four songs on the Nashville Records label, a division of Starday Records. Three of the 45 recordings were his original songs; "Bright Lights Uptown", "Dreamin's a Lonesome Thing", and "You're Looking for an Angel". The fourth vinyl recording, "Another's Kisses", was co-written by Jim Durdel and Tommy Hill (Starday record producer). After the intial recordings, Jim was called back to the studio to record two studio songs they wanted to sell; "Sifting Sands" and "Operator".During this period, Jim was informed that he sounded too much like Jim Reeves to be able to record in Nashville at the time. He was offered an opportunity to join a traveling group of acts that was popular at the time. It was well known that those groups fell into heavy drinking, drugs, and infidelity. A decision was made with his wife, Mona, to not join the traveling circuit.Upon the release of this record with his recording under the name of Cowboy Copus, Jim and his wife explored bringing legal action against the record company. They fell afoul of an unscrupulous attorney and found that they did not own the rights to the song. The family recently researched potentially re-obtaining the rights to the song and it is currently own by a music conglomerate.Jim played music his whole life. He continued to play locally in a band and with friends. Most recently, he played with family and friends approximately every three weeks at a truck stop in Neoga, Illinois. He suffered from heart problems his whole life and had a defibrilator/pacemaker implant for over 25 years. He fell in May of 2009 and fractured his femur. He was not strong enough for surgery, but the Doctors were able to successfully operate on his leg during the second attempted surgery. He was in rehabilitation, finally able to begin serious therapy when his heart gave out on May 30, 2009 with his wife by his side. He told his wife that the night before a woman sat at the end of his bed all night long and he sang to her."Bright Lights Uptown" is currently on radio station music playlists under Jim Durdel. The 45s can be found for sale on auction sites both in the states and in Europe. If anyone would like any further information on Jim Durdel, please contact me at [...].
